Why do we need Puppy Socialisation?
As most of us are aware, wolves are distant ancestors of the modern day domesticated dog. This is not saying that dogs act or should be treated like the wolf as they have evolved and developed into a completely different and unique animal, but as with humans, have kept some of the natural instincts that they need. Studies on wolves over the past 50 years have taught us that they live together in much the same way as humans, having a male and female parent and offspring which they adore and care for with a fierce verocity and teach the ways of the wolf. We can still see this when we watch modern day dogs and they’re pups however in today’s world these roles are mostly taken away from them and replaced by humans. With this is mind we need to ensure that we have the skills and knowledge to step into this role and ensure we raise our adopted pup as best we can. Puppy socialisation is one of the most important skills any dog will need to get along in life.
What is Puppy Socialisation?
One thing we must get clear is that puppy socialisation is not just about introducing your pup to other dogs. It is about introducing them to every physical, mental and emotional response they could possibly encounter. From sounds to tastes to textures it is vital that your pup can experience these new phenomenon in a safe and secure environment.
Research has proven that the most important phase of a puppies life is between 3wks to 3 months old where they learn most of the skills and behaviours needed to become socially acceptable.
At 3 weeks old you can begin to introduce a range of different objects to your puppy. These can be from letting them feel grass, pavements and sand to all types of different textures around them.
